What Size Collar is Best for Your Dog? A Perfect Collar Fitting Guide

dog collar is a piece of material placed around the dogs neck. A collar may be used for restraint, identification, fashion, or protection. A collar is commonly used for walking with a leash if a harness is not being used. It is therefore important find the right collar to fit your dog to ensure their comfort and safety.

A dog collar should be snug but not tight. The best way to measure the size of your dogs neck is to use a seamstress tape or a piece of string. Remember to allow 2 finger spaces between the tape or string and the dogs neck for movement to ensure a comfortable fit. Measure the string with a ruler on a flat surface, or note the measurement on the seamstress tape.

If you have a dog that has an existing collar that needs replacing follow the steps above with your old collar and then when happy with its fit, remove the collar and hold against a tape measure to get the right measurement.

Now that you have the perfect measurement, it’s time to match that to the adjustment of the collar you are interested in with a sizing chart below. We have added some dog breeds in each measurement as a guide, please be aware however, that each dog is unique and depending on their weight and build may need a different size.
